Spider-Proofing and Other Measures

Spider

Spiders affects humans in two dramatic ways. One of them is the unexplained dread and horror of some humans on seeing spiders.  In reality, there are only two well-known poisonous spiders who bites are lethal to humans.

On the other hand, most spider species who are useful to humans, especially among gardeners and farmers. Unless there is an actual infestation of spiders in to your home, many people are at best indifferent to them.

With such nature, there had been several ways to get rid of the spiders living in one’s house because it is not much of a welcome prospect. Without having to exterminate them, there are some of the ways on how to control them.

These days, there are now several spider control Brisbane actions that anybody can call.

Think prevention in the first place, and then removal of the spiders that have made it inside to avoid unwanted residents.

Just like getting rid of fruit flies, some of these tips are more about prevention than cure. This is how to keep spiders away.

Remove cobwebs

Spiders are actually constantly building webs in your home (or around your exterior doors or on the porch) simply because they find it a good environment: safe, dry and with a steady supply of food.

If you regularly disrupt the webs with some simple housekeeping, the spiders will move on. They may not go far, though, but find a place to live in your shed or somewhere.

Vinegar keep spiders away

Cleaning with vinegar has many benefits, but the bonus is that it could be used to keep spiders out of the house. Spiders, like many insects, hate strong scents, and vinegar certainly has a strong odor.

The smell will dissipate fairly quickly for human noses, but spiders will still pick it up and be repelled.

Plants spiders hate

There are some scents that spiders hate that you can spray around the house. You can make life more hard for them by growing spider-repellent plants, such as eucalyptus, lavender, mint and citronella.

Dot these in fall planters (when spiders start to seek shelter indoors more noticeably), or plant them in borders that surround the house. It should discourage spiders and keep themselves away.

Fill gaps and cracks

Expect insect and spiders to get into your home if there are any gaps and cracks around doors and windows. These gaps and cracks always make it easy for spiders going inside your home. Fill these with caulk or weather stripping.

Don’t forget to inspect from time to time at the end of summer and temperatures drop. These are the times spiders will use all means to get inside and stay at warm places.

Turn off lights

Outdoor lighting ideas are of course wonderful for security for your house. However, spiders are attracted to lights too. The biggest reason is that lights bring in their food, the insects. The spiders come when their food is present around these lights.

Without the lights, bugs and other insects don’t come. Even if they do, nobody sees them.

Pruning

It might be great to have a garden by your house. However, they are always an open invitation for spiders to visit and live there by the food. (Insect come and visit the place and no one is happier than the spiders who settles there.)For homeowners, don’t encourage them to make their home right beside your house.Avoid planting bushes and other vegetation by the walls and growing plants up them.

Spiders are an asset in the backyard, so do allow them to thrive while taking measures to keep them out of the house. Piles of logs, twigs, leaves and so on away from the house will also provide them with places to make their homes.

Clean up regularly

Spiders arenot the only reason why you should clean regularly, but keeping them away is. Dust and vacuum, getting into corners and crevices, and tidy and declutter and they are less likely to find a place to settle down.

Don’t forget to spruce up the basement, too. Or else, the spiders will take up residence and move in.

Houseplants

Spiders usually don’t live on indoor plants, but they might hide there. Check it out and take the plants outside if spiders are already housed there.

There could also be some spider mites (these are also arachnids and also have eight legs) and eating your indoor greenery.

Try putting the houseplant in the bathtub or shower and spray with a strong, but fine mist of water. Mites and spider would not like it.

Citrus

For the human nose, citrus smells pleasant. It is said that spiders are repelled by the smell of lemons, limes, and anything from that plant family.

You can create a spray by mixing drops of lemon or an alternative citrus with water and spray on windowsills or in corners.

Also recommended as well as alternative sprays made up using the essential oils of cinnamon, peppermint, lavender or tea tree.

A host of other smells are reputed to keep spiders away. They include mint, lemongrass and eucalyptus. (Some spider experts are not convinced.) However, they smell good and it’s always worth a try.

Woodpiles

Keeping firewood stacked by the house is convenient.  The only inconvenience is that it attracts spiders to build their home in there, constructing cobwebs to entrap small insects (for their food).

Moving the wood pile away from the house helps move the inhabitants in them (spiders, mites, bugs, etc.) as well away from the nearby premises of the house, and lesser chance of getting inside.

Spider-proofing

Might sound fancy enough but the main thing is simply to seal in the gaps, cracks and other crevices in the house to keep insects and spiders out of your residence.

Construction gaps usually occurs in windows, doors, and other places where two materials are supposed to meet (the concrete doorway floor and the swinging door itself and many other supposed connections.)

Doing proper proofing for your home is important as you would have also reduced the chances of attracting spiders into your home when its food sources are kept out. Pests such as cockroaches, cloth moths and fruit flies all serve as attractive food for spiders.
